Local Powers

Explore how we can protect and prioritise climate action throughout the local government reorganisation and devolution processes.

The English Devolution Bill is set to change the make-up of local government in England forever, moving from a two-tier system to a focus on unitary councils, supported by strategic authorities. With final proposals from councils due in September and November respectively, the timing has never been more critical to ensure climate action remains at the forefront of this transformation.

This change could have a substantial impact on local climate delivery, opening up opportunities through access to new powers and levers for many, but also risking absorbing all energy from local government, undermining and delaying progress. This UK100 Countryside Climate Network meeting aims to equip members - whether a rural or urban - with the insights and ideas needed to successfully navigate this transformation.

What you’ll get from the session

  • Programme updates & opportunities: Share UK100 programme updates and discover new opportunities for your council to input and take part in shaping the future of local climate action.
  • Protect your existing work: Learn practical ways to safeguard your current climate policies and projects ahead of LGR, with real examples from councils currently navigating the process and those who have successfully completed unitisation.
  • Hit the ground running: Explore how unitary councils can utilise available levers to accelerate local climate action from day one and before, making the most of new structures and powers.
  • Strategic partnership preparation: Get equipped to work effectively with strategic authorities on climate initiatives, with best practice guidance based on lessons learnt from councils who've already made this transition.
  • Insights for your own proposals: Gather insights and ideas for inclusion in your own LGR proposals ahead of the September or November deadlines.
