Local Climate Engagement

The programme aimed to support local authorities to involve their residents, communities and businesses in climate decision making through co-developing and designing policies and projects through actively involving residents in shaping local climate action, and in turn building trust, and co-creating solutions to the climate challenges that affect us all.

Local Climate Engagement (LCE) was a two part programme delivered between 2022 - 2025. The programme aimed to support local authorities to involve their residents, communities and businesses in climate decision making through co-developing and designing policies and projects through actively involving residents in shaping local climate action, and in turn  building trust, and co-creating solutions to the climate challenges that affect us all.

The first programme phase was a partnership between Involve, Democratic Society, Shared Future and Climate Outreach. It supported X councils to deliver innovative participatory approaches to develop their public engagement. Read the full evaluation for phase one for further learning.

The second programme phase, delivered in partnership with Involve, to share the learning with other local and combined authorities, and national government. Through phase two we bought conversation on public engagement to our lunchtime learning series, workshops at Innovation Zero, sessions at our Climate Leadership Academy. We also gathered up all the case studies, guidance and our toolkit in the new LCE Resource Hub

If you’re a local government officer or councillor looking to improve and develop your public engagement processes, check out the learning from this programme at the LCE Resource Hub, and read the our inclusive climate action toolkit.
