From Insight to Action: Local Solutions for Net Zero
Lessons from Calderdale’s work to unlock barriers to net zero that can be applied nationally
Reducing energy use in the built environment is an urgent challenge being grappled with across the country. Delivering net zero will require collaborative and innovative ways of working at all levels of government as well as with the business and community sectors.
At this event we will share the groundbreaking work taking place in Calderdale to push forward thinking on the delivery of net zero targets. Join stakeholders, partners and decision-makers from West Yorkshire and beyond to tackle the complexities of decarbonisation planning and the retrofit of historic buildings.
This is a hybrid event. For online attendees, the link to the live stream will be shared via email prior to the conference. Members will be able to join this conference online, joining the specific panels throughout the day with regular breaks.
UK100 will also be hosting a workshop at the conference for CCN members to explore the challenges of retrofitting iconic housing in protected and culturally significant landscapes. Together we will discuss the solutions to protecting the cultural significance of housing on the outside, whilst also ensuring warm, healthy homes behind the front door.
If you'd like to join this workshop in person, we have a limited number of tickets for CCN members, and West Yorkshire councils, please email membership@uk100.org for more details.
Topics that will be covered throughout the day include:
Local Area Energy Planning
At the event, Calderdale will showcasing the findings of the Local Area Energy Plan (LAEP), the pilot for West Yorkshire. The LAEP identifies how we can decarbonise energy locally, setting out a range of options, priority projects and costs. It includes a new and innovative spatial Digital Twin model of Calderdale. This model displays dynamic visualisations of local building characteristics and net zero opportunities. This work is supported by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and the North East & Yorkshire Net Zero Hub.
Powering change: making local net zero a reality
Like many councils in the UK, Calderdale has set an ambitious target of reaching net zero by 2038. Calderdale's Climate Action Partnership has been working with UK100 to explore the local barriers to reducing emissions. At the event, Calderdale Council and UK100 will set out the work required at a regional and national level to overcome these. UK100 will also be showcasing their latest research exploring how we can put net zero at the heart of devolution.
From motivation to momentum: Calderdale’s retrofit challenge
Calderdale’s pre-1920s stone-built properties create an iconic landscape which presents significant challenges to net zero. Making up over one-third of the housing stock, these buildings are often poorly insulated and retrofitting them can be complex and expensive. At the event, we will share our research around creating a better customer journey for retrofit. This work is supported by Innovate UK and is being delivered in partnership with Todmorden Learning Centre and Community Hub and Carbon Co-op.
